Our Story

In 1994, Phillip Dillon came up with the concept of a portable water softener while he was working on a client's boat (a 70' Hatteras Motor Yacht). The owner of the vessel was so pleased with his rented, traditional, watersoftener that he was attempting to "borrow" it and take it back North with him. Dillon, being knowledgeable on the subject, explained to the gentleman that the unit would need charging, and without the proper set-up and maintenance it would not be able to work. The client reluctantly decided to leave it on the dock, but said, "somebody oughtta make these things so ya' can take 'em with ya'!" Dillon was struck by the way the softened water turned a seemingly kind and gentle person, into a desperate thief.

After extensive research, testing and help from the engineers at companies like Dow Chemical and Purolite, he came up with the original Wet Spot 2500; so-named because it was designed to soften 2500 gallons of 4-grain hard water (South Florida's hardness rating), in-between charges. The first “2500” models hit the docks in 1995 for test marketing. They were an instant success. As the units began to travel and sell in other markets we realized that because they would soften only 1250 gallons of 8-grain water, or 5000 gallons of 2-grain water, we needed to get away from the misleading gallon figures. We did this by adding 10% more capacity and calling the new model the Wet Spot Plus Model because she was bigger, more heavy duty, but still just as beautiful as the last one! We also came out with the Wet Spot Super Model, the biggest portable softener known to mankind. The Heavy Duty model was then designed to handle the in between situations. It’s not oversized but it will soften enough water to still be convenient for a vessel in the 85’ – 105’ range. Our current line of products is designed to meet the requirements of any size portable softening application.
After establishing the Wet Spot as "the industry standard in portable watersofteners," Dillon began talks with long-time friend, business associate, and WetSpot retailer/distributor James Strauss, about expanding the company. Strauss believed in the product so much after years of marketing it through his chain of retailers/distributors, that he ultimately decided to purchase the company in June of 2003.
Over 2000 Wet Spots are now in use all over the world. With our excellent customer service and a 12-year warranty, you can buy a Wet Spot with confidence.
